The Movie That Moved the Industry

Few films have ever changed a sport the way A River Runs Through It changed fly fishing. When Robert Redford’s cinematic adaptation of Norman Maclean’s semi-autobiographical novella arrived in theaters in October 1992, it did something no marketing campaign, no gear innovation, and no industry initiative had managed to do: it made fly fishing feel like something worth longing for. Participation surged, rivers gained new advocates, and a quiet regional pastime became a national—and international—movement.

But how deep did that impact really run? And what does it mean for the sport, our waters, and the communities connected to both, more than 30 years later?

The Santa Barbara Flyfishers are hosting an evening event on Tuesday, March 31, at the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara, that will explore exactly those questions. Attendees are invited to join a distinguished panel of voices from the arts, conservation, fly fishing, and indigenous perspectives to examine the film’s legacy. The conversation promises to be as multifaceted and intricate as the story that started it all.

Moderating is Chris Wood, President & CEO of Trout Unlimited. Panelists include Tom Skerritt (the film’s Reverend Maclean and a dedicated river advocate), Eric Ladd (American Rivers, Outlaw Partners), journalist John Maclean (son of Norman Maclean), and Kayeloni Scott (tribal member and Nez Perce descendant).

Following the panel, attendees will be treated to a one-time screening of the film itself—a rare chance to see it on the big screen with the people who know its story best.

As Norman Maclean wrote: “Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it.”

California Fly Fisher is proud to be a media partner and will cover the event and its key takeaways in an online article and in the Summer issue.
