About the Artist
For me, one of life’s greatest joys is to combine fly fishing with the way I make my living. I’ve been making ceramic tile for close to thirty years and have always drawn my inspiration from the natural world. When I’m casting a fly to rising trout on a mountain stream, nothing else exists, but when I get back to my studio to begin designing, I remember that stream. Sometimes it’ll be a certain fish that inspires, at other times, the streamside vegetation, and at others, the color of the water will be an inspiration for a new glaze color.
I live in a small rural town, and my studio overlooks a stream with an endangered, closed coho run. Where I work is constantly surrounded by the many colors and forms in nature, yet most of my work goes into houses in a man-made urban setting. I like to think that those who install my tile are hoping to bring a little of the natural world and my experiences of the outdoors into their homes.
