Letter From the Publisher: Building Community

Welcome to the Summer 2025 issue of California Fly Fisher

When we relaunched California Fly Fisher last year, we did so with the belief that California’s fly-fishing community deserved a publication that truly reflected its diversity, passion, and depth of knowledge. Now, as we move into our second year, that belief feels even more urgent—and more rewarding.

What continues to inspire us is the way our community shows up: at the water’s edge, in local fly shops, online, and increasingly, in person. This spring, we hosted several International Fly Fishing Film Festival (IF4) events across Northern California—gatherings that reminded us how connected we are by a shared love of rivers, fish, and wild places. We’re bringing those events to Southern California this fall and hope to see even more of you there.

We’re also growing through partnerships—with organizations like California Trout, who have long fought to protect our fisheries; with content creators like Fish the West Films, who help tell the stories that matter; and with brands who recognize the value of California’s unique fly fishing culture. These collaborations help us amplify the voices of anglers across the state.

In this Summer issue, we explore community through pieces like Casting Clubs of Northern California, a look at the Golden Gate Angling and Casting Club and others keeping the craft and camaraderie alive. We also head south for Urban Fishing – LA, where the fly fishing scene is as unexpected as it is vibrant.

The casting club story hits close to home. When I stepped into this role, my biggest worry wasn’t about running a magazine—it was whether I had the fly-fishing chops to do it justice. I didn’t come with a fly-fishing industry background or decades of experience with a rod in hand. But that’s where Editor-at-Large George Revel and our outstanding team of editorial advisors come in. I may be conducting the symphony, but they’re the ones playing all the instruments.

Still, it’s been a steep and exciting learning curve. I’ve soaked up knowledge from every page we publish. I’ve enrolled in GGACC’s Learn to Fly Fish program—and recently earned my Bronze Level Casting Skills. Growing as an angler is, without a doubt, the best perk of the job.

What’s most exciting is that this magazine is becoming more than a publication—it’s becoming a hub for connection. And that’s because of you.

If you enjoy what we’re doing, let us know. Email us at info@CalFlyFisher.com. Share your thoughts, tell a friend, and help us keep the momentum going. We have big plans ahead—and we’re just getting started.

See you on the water.
