There’s a First Time for Everything

Last month, I chased stripers on the California Delta for the very first time. Captain Mike Costello—our Spotlight Destination author and guide—and my friend Sydnie Kohara, a skilled Delta angler, were my companions. After weeks of poring over articles, maps, and images for this Fall issue, taking a real-world “test-drive” of the Delta didn’t disappoint. The day was flawless, the company outstanding, and I even brought a couple of keepers to hand. Thank you, Mike and Sydnie, for an unforgettable day on the water.

More firsts are ahead for California Fly Fisher. On October 21, we’ll host our inaugural webinar—a roundtable discussion that brings this issue’s Delta stories to life. Join us as we talk striped bass tactics, the Delta’s unique geology, and everyone’s favorite striper fly, the Adachi Clouser.

We’re also debuting our first online Gift Guide, brimming with thoughtful suggestions from our editorial contributors and committee members. Whether you’re shopping for the angler in your life—or curating your own wish list—you’ll find inspired picks perfect for the holidays or any season.

This Fall issue is rich with ideas and insight: Putah Creek’s storied waters, an intimate look at Southern California guide Conway Bowman and his mako shark pursuits, Yamsi Ranch on Oregon’s Williamson River, steelhead swing tips from George Revel, and meadow restoration benefitting our state fish through Trout Unlimited’s Golden Trout Project.

I hope you, too, find a “first” to savor this season—on the Delta or on your own favorite water.
